Course Outline

MODULE 1: STYLE
Personal style is integral to all decorators and key to their reputation. Learn how to identify and establish a personal style, recognise and work with others and their differing styles, and produce décor proposals that are sensitive to the space and design of a project.

 

MODULE 2: DESIGN PRINCIPLES & ELEMENTS
Once able to identify and work with the essential ingredients of interior decorating, a decorator should be able to transform any space. The correct use of design principles will make an interior space feel cohesive and well put together.

 

MODULE 3: TEXTILES & FABRICS
Explore the history of textiles, their role, use and application. Also learn to work with repeating patterns, railroaded fabrics and textile suppliers.

 

MODULE 4: COLOUR
Colour is one of the most important elements in interior decorating. Explore the science behind colour, colour combinations and schemes, working with a colour wheel, choosing and using colour, and selecting colour schemes for interiors.

 

MODULE 5: SPACE PLANNING
Space planning has a very strong impact on interiors. Learn how to plan spaces in order to ensure comfort, balance and manoeuvrability.

If you aspire to open your own business, become a professional decorator, or are interested in a career in the decorating and design industry – this course will help you build on basic skills you’ve already acquired in the Foundation course.

Course Outline

MODULE 1: ART & FRAMING
Art is an important finishing touch for any interior. Every decorator should have a basic understanding of how to recommend and frame art.

 

MODULE 2: WINDOW TREATMENTS
Understanding window and interior needs, the right window treatment, selection and application of fabrics for curtains and blinds, working with fabrics – repeating patterns, calculations, measurements and quantities and working with suppliers such as curtain manufacturers.

 

MODULE 3: FURNITURE & UPHOLSTERY
Learn about the history of furniture as well as terminology, styles, selection and application of fabrics, working with fabrics – patterns and stripes, calculations, measurements and quantities, working with professional suppliers such as upholsterers and frame makers.

 

MODULE 4: MOOD BOARDS & SAMPLE BOARDS
Use and put together mood boards and sample boards to communicate with and present work – from fabric and paint swatches to visual references, 3D items, floor plans and more.

 

MODULE 5: TRIMMINGS
Use trimmings to enhance and embellish upholstery, curtains, cushions and other soft furnishings.

Achieve a level of expertise with advanced skills from flooring, lighting and wallpaper to marketing and business setup.

Course Outline

MODULE 1: LIGHTS AND LIGHTING
Lighting is one of the most overlooked and yet important elements of good interior décor. Essential to mood and ambience – look at types of lighting, lighting areas and items in a home or office, working with lampshades (styles, fabrics, measurements) and more.

 

MODULE 2: WALLS & WALL COVERINGS
Due to the surface area it consumes, wallpaper and paint packs a big punch. Wall covering or paint is one of the easiest, and most inexpensive, ways to add colour, art and design to a home or office.

 

MODULE 3: FLOORS & FLOOR COVERINGS
Floor covering is often the most expensive finish installed in a home or office. Look at flooring guidelines, types of flooring, working with flooring experts, flooring trends and more.

 

MODULE 4: MARKETING & SALES
Understanding the role of marketing and how sales strategies can help make your business a success. Getting to grips with the 7 Ps of marketing and marketing vehicles such as print material, networking, websites, social media, referrals, publicity and writing.

 

MODULE 5: BUSINESS TOOLS
Get a detailed understanding of the legal considerations that are part of starting a business. Plan expenditure around launching a business, managing daily running costs and setting realistic financial goals as well as the financial documentation that goes with it.

 

MODULE 6: PRESENTATION & CLIENT ENGAGEMENT
Go through the ins and outs of engaging with clients – from taking a brief to servicing their needs. Also learn how to present your ideas and then draw up contracts, term and conditions, and more.
